How to Open a Word Document in Adobe Reader

  1. Home
  2. Software
  3. Microsoft Office

Windows 7; User saves a word document that came via e-mail. When I check file properties it shows correct name/extension, e.g. file.doc; however, the file icon is that of Acrobat reader and when double-clicked file tries to open in Acrobat. I checked the file from remote computer and also logged-in to his computer where the file is as a different user, and in both cases the file shows Word icon and opens properly with Word. But not if you login as him. File association is properly set under his login to open .doc files with Word.

What about .DOCX files?  Make sure that those are also set to open in Word.

I have had similar things happen - you might want to try a repair with Office/Word to see if that fixes it. When I had something like this happen I think I had to end up uninstalling / reinstalling Adobe... but I hope you don't have to go that  far.

I'll give that a shot, but technically we shouldn't have to do this since association to .doc is configured correctly including .docx to answer Sean's question

Yeah, we can try that too, but funny thing is that when I logged-in as me to his laptop, those two .docs did show correctly and opened with Word no problem.

the association may just be broken on that one file is the user had previously downloaded a file with the same name and told it to open with the wrong program. Try right clik.. check which program it says should open the file and change it to Word if necessary.

You probably need to re-associate the word files with Word.

Click Start

Type File Association

Click Change the file type associated with a file extension

Use the Change program button.

Are you saying that file associations are set on per-user basis? It works fine if I login myself, but we'll give that a try...although it doesn't make sense LOL

Can you open up any other Word doc or even the program itself in his program. If not, then it seems like there is an issue with the association of the Word program and his profile.

That is correct. They are bound by the user-profile. Worst case nuke and rebuild their profile, but you should be able to fix this single one by right click -> open with -> choose default program.

I always do this:

1) Save the file to the Desktop

2) Right-click the file and select Open With

3) Select Microsoft Word as the program and make sure to CHECK the box at the bottom saying to "Always Open with this Program"

4) Select OK and close out

5) Try to open that document again, it should open in Word now

From my understanding the Tech is trying to say this happens when he logs on remotely am I correct. and this is happening on a remote Server am I correct.

We are having the same issue with a Remote profile on a server and it will not allow us to change it nethier can we access CMD or REG edit .

Alex, as others stated... document associations are user-profile bound. Hopefully this solved your issue... if so I always appreciate a Best Answer Vote or a Helpful post vote

Thanks

You also may have to change it to something else, then back to Word. I've run into that a few times.

You're assuming that the .doc? extensions are configured to open in Word.

I don't mean that the file association has been redirected (e.g., open .doc with Adobe Reader), but that the definition of the .doc and .docx extensions have been changed to use Adobe Reader. It's worth a check. If it fails, rebuild the user's profile. If that fails, wipe and reload.

Mr.Bell

Just open 'default programs' from search in start menu OR control panel... then set it there.   This can set every extension known so this is where really it should be set.  It's why the app is there for but a lot of people still don't know about it.

Thanks for your 2cents, but read question carefully before responding: "File association is properly set under ... to open .doc files with Word." Thanks again. Alex.

Thanks. I'm awaiting for user to login to recreate his profile and check it out. Hope this was it as I think it should be...LOL Alex.

Profile is whacked out

I too thought that was the easiest solution of all to try as everything else seemed in place association-wise, and I know that file associations are not user-specific as someone suggested here. Thanks. Alex.
